The end of an era.
April 1, 2008 – 3:40 pmI don’t know how many of you are professional wrestling fans. I admit that I don’t watch wrestling as much as I used to, but last night I had to watch WWE RAW.
For those of you that don’t know, for the past few months or so, Ric Flair has had a stipulation that if he loses a singles match he must retire. Well, on Sunday night at Wrestlemania, it happened. He lost the match of a lifetime with the Heartbreak Kid, Shawn Michaels. I didn’t get to see it, but I’ve heard only good things about it.
Anyhow, last night on RAW, they gave Flair a sendoff worthy of his career. First of all, he came out to give his farewell address. He got into the ring, and thanked his fans. He thanked the other wrestlers that he had wrestled over the course of his career, and he said his goodbyes.
Flair was about to leave the ring, and HHH came out and stopped him. He gave Flair his thanks, and then started brinining out Flair’s old teammates and opponents. First of all, the rest of the Four Horsemen, Arn and Ole Anderson, Tully Blanchard, and their manager, J.J. Dillon. Harley Race, Ricky Steamboat (I used to love watching his matches), and Greg “The Hammer” Valentine. Other current WWE wrestlers came to the ring to thank Flair. They brought out his family.
It was an extremely emotional scene. Every time someone would get in the ring to hug Flair, the tears started flowing. Finally, the locker room emptied, and the wrestlers filled the aisle. The wrestlers and fans were all chanting “Thank you Ric. Thank you Ric.” Many of the wrestlers and fans were tearing up.
Watching it, I was half worried that Vince McMahon would do something to ruin the moment, but he didn’t. He didn’t even make an appearance, he just let the fans and other wrestlers show their love and respect for Ric Flair. I was crying myself as I watched, as I’m crying now as I write this.
Ric Flair is definitely one of the best professional wrestlers of all time. He could make the fans cheer him, or he could make the fans boo him. Nobody could cut a promo like him.
Saturday, Ric Flair was inducted into the WWE Hall Of Fame. Sunday, he wrestled an incredible final match. And last night, he was given a sendoff worthy of his legendary career. All I have left to say, is… “WOOOOOOOOO!” Thank you Ric.
